There’s a channel called #what-we-love
in one of the Discord servers I lurk on. It’s a place for people to share
whatever they’re passionate about, like TV shows, games, whatever. Here’s a brief post I wrote.
Y’all, I love the song “Omobolasire” by Prozzäk.
The story of Prozzäk starts with a different band. The Philosopher Kings were a Canadian alternative band back in the 1990s. (Their big song was “Hurts to Love You”, another great song.) Two of the band members got into a fight while touring. Instead of breaking up, they started writing pop songs together to patch things up. The songs didn’t suit the band, so they came up with cartoon alter egos and released them under the name Prozzäk.
(For the record, this was a few years before Damon Albarn did the same thing as Gorillaz.)
This is my favourite song of theirs. It’s about the lead singer’s forbidden love with an African princess, which sounds a little dodgy these days but I swear it’s all in good taste. But it’s really about the catchy chorus; the bridge where an electric guitar shows up, plays four notes, and disappears; the line “I fly from Heathrow back to Lagos”; and the pounding drums that return at the very end. I love it.
