New PC

I finally pulled the trigger on getting a new computer. Between the (foolish) GST holiday and worries that the incoming Trump presidency will drive prices up, I figured it was time. Usually I rely on my emails to keep track of my computer purchases, but I have zero emails this time. Thus, in the interest of having a record, here’s the fancy new gear:
- AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3d @4.2GHz CPU
- 1 TB NVMe hard drive
- 32 GB DDR5 RAM
- 750W power supply
- Case, motherboard, fans, etc.
The fancy old gear is my video card: a GeForce 3600 I bought back in early 2022. It’s new enough that I didn’t think it was worth upgrading.
Because I wanted to bring in my old video card, and because I don’t really know anything about the latest computer technology, I went to Memory Express instead of buying online. The salesman suggested a bunch of components, and I mostly said “Sounds good.” I erred on the side of spending a little more, because I have a tendency to keep using things ‘til they get old.
Here’s my previous desktop, which I put together back in the fall of 2016:
- Intel Core i5-6500 @3.2GHz
- 500 GB SATA SSD
- 16 GB DDR4 RAM
- Case, motherboard, fans, etc.
- Existing power supply and GeForce 960 video card.
I got a lot of mileage out of that computer.
For completeness, I also bought an Intel NUC as a home server back in 2019. It quietly runs a home web server and services via docker. It’s great. <3
